DIKU posters

Recently a student from DIKU requested a digital version of the poster I did in 1995.

The story for the poster is that I was doing small posters as a commercial for the annual revue held at DIKU at each year's summer party. The first couple of posters were removed almost immediately so I had to put up extra only to find out that they were removed. The real reason was that people actually took them! So I had to print extra copies not to get them "stolen". I was then encouraged to make a compilation of the thirteen posters which I then did. Oh! All the posters are by the way hand drawn and layouted in Corel Draw. Each done in an evenings time or so.

The poster, being that old, only exists in an analog format, i.e. the negative in double size of the poster. I know that a digital compilation resembling the actual poster's composition of all 13 posters exists I just don't know who has it anymore.

You know one thing leads to another. These posters more or less got me the job as revue boss (main organizer) and later on a job in the interactive internet common target roll over drop shadow html javascript business - before the bubble had started to show even the first signs of flatulence. And I got out before the big burst :)

Lot's of bad jokes ahead. Some of them are best if you are a Dane, I'm sorry. Some might be slightly offending.

Aluen

The title refers to Alien. "The ALU" in Danish is "ALUen".
The 8th processor refers to the title "Alien - the 8th passenger"
The caption "in (VOID) no one can hear you scream" is taken directly from the two alien films (I don't believe in Alien3).
The "No intelligence inside" logo has been copied by many people since. A few month after releasing the poster the rePentium errors were introduced.
The shape of the ALU is of course as depicted in Tanenbaum's "SCO".

Batchman & Round Robin

Batchman - Batman (1989)
Round Robin is a graph traversal algorithm.
"MOD" in Danish is due to computer science an ambigious word, as it also has the meaning "against".
The Dynamic Duo - I didn't think of 'The Static Duo' at the time...
CAD-Woman - Cat Woman.
J*keren - A "*" is called a joker in Denmark.
Plingvinen - refering to the character "'" called a 'pling' in Danish. The Penguin is in Danish "pingvinen", therefore "Plingvinen".

MyChar'L' Keyton = Michael Keaton.
Dummy deVito = Danny deVito.
Track Nicholsync = Jack Nicholson.
Meeshell Fejler = Michelle Pfeiffer.
CAD-woman is, by the way, equipped with a cross-hair mouse for digitizing.

Dirty Carry

Client Servood is... you guessed it! Clint Eastwood.
Dirty Carry, need I explain this one?
"Go ahead - make myday.c" refers to the unix command "make"
"Warning Bros." is "Warner Bros."
Carry Call-By-Valuehan is Harry Calahan (Dirty Harry)
"Lige på kernen" is a misinterpretation of "Lige på kornet" ("In the line of fire" released at that time). A "kerne" is a Danish word for "kernel".

Endian Jones

Endian Jones is refering to the way bytes in numbers exceeding one byte storage are stored (least significant byte first or last).
When Endian Jones replaces a disk he's making a bag-up :}
His whip is now a computer mouse.
A duck is in danish an "and". Logical "and"s on top of the lost SPARC? :}
The computer is hanging from the bridge.
Have you ever tried to FLAME a computer mouse. I know this one is bad!

Evaluelle

How did I come up with this idea? Hmmm.... This is the only poster I did not draw. I found the picture in a Danish weekly magazine called "Alt for Damerne". I gather that the way her nipple is "handled" inspired me and some friends to make some jokes like "He is certainly a computer scientist" or "That's how a computer scientist turns on women". Eventually these posters were removed the second they were introduced. Well...

Kantinevagten

At the time a lot of people demanded that our "kantinevagter" should fill our refreshment stands with candy, Coca-Cola. DKD (Desperate Female Computer Science Students) wanted female hygiene towels(?) to become available too (TAMPAX is one of these kinds).
NJORDISK FILM refers to a computer on DIKU only available to students writing a master thesis on computer graphics. It is called NJORD. A Danish film company is called NORDISK FILM (or Pathe Nordisk).
Ole Bornedal is the director of "Nattevagten".
Sofie Graabøl stars as the female main character.
"Fuzzy" is a Danish composer.

Last Action Table

Last Action Table - Last Action Hero (1993) "Action table" is taken from Aho, Sethi & Ullmann's book on compilers. The contents of the action table is actually taken from the book.
ColumPIA refers to the PIA circuit on DIKU's motorola computers.
xbiff is depicted as an roasting xbeaf!
The popcorn box's label is "push pop".
The xeyes are "red" with blood veins.
Lenna does NOT look like I'm used to!
A windshield wiper should of course be an essential part of every window manager.
Look closely at the spectators and you will find both Elvis Presley and Robocop.
GOOF - the number "4" is NOT reversed on the action table.
COMMANDO.COM refers to the "COMMAND.COM" under MS-DOS and Arnold's movie Commando.
TOTAL INSTALL refers to one of the installation options under MS-windows (and others) and Arnold's movie Total Recall.
"Moria" and "Xarchie" you must know. The "PonyFuck063.jpg" refers to a DIKU revue sketch from 1993 where a user downloaded aprox. 80 MB of pictures, dumped the lot save one, which ("ponyfuck063.jpg")
AC/DC and MegaDeth contributed with their music to the movie.

The parity-bit
To "interpret" in danish is to "fortolke", therefore "J.R.R. Fortolkien".

The arrow on the enter-button is not a normal arrow.
"alt" in danish is "everything", the shift button is then "intet" or "nothing".
"del" in danish is also "divide", thus an altered del-key to "conquer" or "hærsk".
16 function buttons on the keyboard must imply a depicted jet plane on the F16 button :)
"Enter" might be interpreted as "Come in!" in danish: "Kom ind!"

Abyss in Danish is "dyb". When having problems finishing a master thesis we talk about being stuck in the master thesis "swamp". 2 plus 2 makes 4.
"Computer Graphics - vanAndedam" refers to the book written by Foley, vanDam et al.

Editor Harris is actor Ed Harris.

"Bewitched" in danish is "forhexet" - hex decimal, get it?
Max(von,Sydow) plays the exorcist.
The beams from the book naturally XORs the letters.
"Daemon-ud-driveren" - An xorcist in danish is a "Dæmonuddriver". A daemon is... and a driver is... Well ya know!
